FURTHER ACTION.
1. The sub-committee at its meeting on the 28th June, 1949,
commented on the Hong Kong Report and expressed concern
at the dearth of certificated teachers.
They requested
further information on the question of teachers in
training and on the number of pupils attending the three
teacher Training Colleges ACEC (B)(49)3rd Minutes7.
2 A despatch was sent to Hong Kong expressing the
satisfaction of the Committee at the plans being made to
develop teacher-training and to increase the number of
schools; but stating that the Committee was seriously
perturbed at the 'dearth of certificated teachers' and
the paucity of teachers in training at the Northcote
Training College, especially since expatriate staff was
becoming increasingly difficult to secure. It was hoped
that all possible measures to correct this dearth would
be explored, and in particular such action as might be
possible would be taken to encourage the improvement of
teachers' salaries in subsidized schools.

An explanation was also asked of the apparent
inconsistency between the figures for teachers in training
given in chapter VIII of the report and the figure of
713 given in annex 1 on page 48.
